Terbela Power Station

Terbela Power Station Testing Project

Project Overview

At Tarbela Power Station, our team carried out essential diagnostic testing and augmentation on 220kV systems, focusing on circuit breakers and Current Transformers (CTs). These components are vital for ensuring reliable fault interruption, accurate current measurement, and operational safety across the high-voltage network. All procedures followed NTDC protocols and IEC standards.

Testing Scope

The project covered a full range of high-voltage tests, including:

  • Augmentation and replacement of 220kV circuit breakers

  • High-voltage withstand and insulation resistance testing

  • Contact resistance measurement and breaker timing analysis

  • Complete CT testing, including insulation, ratio, burden, and excitation

  • SF6 gas testing for gas-insulated breakers

  • CT wiring continuity and loop verification

Key Testing Procedures

Breaker timing and motion analysis were performed using Omicron CIBANO 500 to detect mechanical anomalies and assess trip/close coil performance. CTs were evaluated with the Omicron CT Analyzer for ratio accuracy and insulation integrity. SF6 dew point and purity were checked using COSA Xentaur equipment to ensure dielectric quality. Manual and remote operation tests were conducted to verify breaker interlocks and safety systems.

Project Documentation and Impact

All testing data was logged using Omicron PTM software. The project enhanced the performance and reliability of Tarbela’s high-voltage systems, reinforcing operational safety and contributing to the overall stability of Pakistan’s power grid.
