Ayk (Pvt.) Ltd. proudly hosted a two-day advanced technical training session in Karachi, in collaboration with OMICRON Electronics GmbH Austria, a globally renowned manufacturer of grid station testing equipment. The event took place at NED University of Engineering & Technology, with an on-site demonstration scheduled at K-Electric’s Grid Station. This training was part of our continuous effort to elevate the technical capabilities of engineers working in Pakistan’s power sector.

The session was led by Mr. Sofiane BAKKAY (Canada), a renowned Regional Application Specialist for Power Transformers and Rotating Machines at OMICRON Electronics GmbH, Austria. OMICRON is a leader in the design and manufacture of grid station testing equipment, widely recognized for its cutting-edge technology in electrical testing.

This specialized training was conducted to enhance the knowledge and skills of engineers working in power sector, providing them with critical insights into the latest transformer testing methodologies and advanced diagnostics for power transformers. Attendees gained hands-on experience with OMICRON’s industry-leading equipment, including the TESTRANO 600 system — the world’s first portable three-phase test system — ideally suited for both routine and diagnostic transformer testing.

Agenda:

The training session provided valuable theoretical and hands-on insights into cutting-edge testing methodologies using OMICRON’s flagship equipment. Below is a summary of the key topics and training agenda covered during the Karachi session:

  • Introduction to Power Transformers:
A comprehensive overview of transformer construction, working principles, and critical components. Participants developed a solid foundation for understanding transformer behavior under various operating conditions.

  • Hands-On with TESTRANO 600:
Engineers performed a variety of conventional electrical tests using the TESTRANO 600 — the world’s first portable, three-phase test system for power transformers. This hands-on session emphasized safety, efficiency, and accuracy.

  • OLTC DRM and VAM Testing:
Focused sessions on Dynamic Resistance Measurement (DRM) and Vibro-Acoustic Measurement (VAM) were held to assess the performance and mechanical integrity of On-Load Tap Changers (OLTCs).

  • DFR Test using DIRANA:
An advanced technique for assessing the condition of transformer insulation through Dielectric Frequency Response (DFR) testing. The session highlighted early detection of moisture and aging-related issues in insulation systems.

  • SFRA Test with FRANEO800:
Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) was demonstrated to detect winding deformations and mechanical displacements inside transformers following transportation or fault events.

  • Partial Discharge (PD) Testing:
The trainers explained methods for detecting Partial Discharges, a critical diagnostic for identifying internal insulation weaknesses that could lead to failure.

  • Rotating Machine Diagnostics:
Participants also explored testing techniques for rotating electrical machines, including Dielectric Factor (DF), Capacitance, Partial Discharge, and ELCID (Electromagnetic Core Imperfection Detection) testing.

  • Quick Test Functions and Safety Protocols:
Engineers learned to execute custom test sequences using the Quick Test functionality, enabling rapid evaluation of core transformer parameters with predefined logic.

  • Interactive Learning Environment:
The session fostered a highly interactive environment, allowing participants to engage with OMICRON’s Primary Testing Manager™ (PTM) software, simulate various fault scenarios, and analyze real-time data for decision-making.

Conclusion:

The Karachi training session proved to be a valuable platform for engineers to deepen their understanding of advanced testing methodologies for transformers and rotating machines. By working directly with OMICRON’s cutting-edge TESTRANO 600 system, participants acquired practical knowledge and diagnostic skills essential for improving maintenance practices and ensuring asset reliability in real-world grid station environments.
