Ayk (Pvt.) Ltd. proudly organized a two-day advanced technical training session in Islamabad, in collaboration with OMICRON Electronics GmbH Austria, a globally recognized leader in grid station testing technology. The session was held at Bahria University H-11 Campus, with a practical demonstration planned at IESCO’s Grid Station, as part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening technical proficiency within Pakistan’s power sector.

The training was conducted by Mr. Sofiane BAKKAY (Canada), a distinguished Regional Application Specialist at OMICRON Electronics GmbH, Austria, specializing in Power Transformers and Rotating Machines. His extensive expertise provided participants with valuable insights into global testing standards and methodologies.

This exclusive session aimed to upgrade the knowledge and technical capabilities of engineers involved in transformer and rotating machinery diagnostics. With a focus on hands-on learning, attendees engaged directly with OMICRON’s cutting-edge equipment.

Agenda:

  • Transformer Design & Component Overview:
Participants were introduced to the structural and operational fundamentals of power transformers, with emphasis on the significance of each component in diagnostic testing.

  • TESTRANO 600 Operational Training:
Attendees received detailed instruction and hands-on practice with TESTRANO 600, focusing on its multi-functional capabilities for conducting electrical tests on both single- and three-phase power transformers.

  • On-Load Tap Changer Testing (OLTC DRM & VAM):
The session included testing techniques to diagnose OLTC condition using Dynamic Resistance Measurement (DRM) and Vibro-Acoustic Measurement (VAM). These tools help detect mechanical faults and contact issues.

  • Dielectric Frequency Response (DFR) with DIRANA:
A dedicated module on DFR testing explained the assessment of moisture content and aging in insulation systems — a vital step for transformer reliability and life assessment.

  • Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA):
Through practical use of the FRANEO800, engineers were shown how to perform SFRA tests to identify possible mechanical displacements in windings due to transportation, faults, or short circuits.

  • Partial Discharge (PD) Diagnostics:
Detailed instruction on Partial Discharge Testing allowed participants to understand how to detect internal defects and potential breakdown points within the transformer insulation.

  • Rotating Machines Testing Techniques:
Training covered electrical testing of rotating machinery (e.g., motors and generators), including Capacitance, Dielectric Factor (DF), Partial Discharge, and ELCID testing methods.

  • Advanced Testing Modules in PTM Software:
Attendees learned how to use OMICRON’s Primary Testing Manager™ (PTM) software to schedule, run, and document custom test sequences, including the Quick Test, Cooldown Test, and Vector Group Check.

  • Best Practices & Safety Protocols:
The agenda emphasized testing safety, interpretation of test results, and how to apply diagnostic insights in the field for proactive maintenance and asset health management.

Conclusion:

The Islamabad training session offered engineers an exceptional opportunity to explore advanced testing techniques for power transformers and rotating machines, guided by international expertise and supported by OMICRON’s state-of-the-art equipment. Through interactive demonstrations and real-world applications using the TESTRANO 600, participants gained valuable hands-on experience, enhancing their ability to perform precise and reliable diagnostic assessments in the field.
